Since then, the Where’s Wally? books have held a favourite spot on bookstore shelves the world over and have sold over 65 million copies worldwide in 31 countries. Wally has reached celebrity status: he has been referenced in the primetime American TV shows Frasier, The Simpsons and Friends; he appeared on the 1000th anniversary cover of Rolling Stone magazine as a cultural icon of the last 40 years; he has even been found on Google Earth!Martin Handford spent much of his childhood drawing and his earliest influences were cinema epics and playing with toy soldiers. At art college he continued to draw what he calls “busy and militarily correct battle scenes” which led to his job as a freelance illustrator specialising in drawing crowd scenes for numerous clients. Each picture takes Martin months to draw. “As I work my way through a picture, I add Wally when I come to what I feel is a good place to hide him,” he explains. In celebration of Wally’s longevity and popularity, Walker Books is teaming up with the Booksellers Association’s Independent Bookshop Week and Books Are campaign and independent bookshops across the country, including Charlie Byrne's, to have fun and encourage people to visit independent bookshops. There is no charge to participate, and if you miss our 11 o'clock story time there'll still be a chance to grab your colouring sheet throughout the rest of Saturday, just look for our very own Wally/children's section manager Ruth wandering around our shop! For more information on our Where's Wally Colouring Challenge, simply contact us.
